11 Tools Reflection...

Favorite tools...Skype, IMovie, and GoogleDocs.
I really like the idea of Skype. I have connected with another IB teacher from Azerbaijan and we plan to set up Skype for our students to discuss various readings and current events. In addition, I plan to use IMovie with at least one of my units for presentation purposes.

I am thrilled to have learned about these tools and look forward to implementing them into my classroom.

Tool #11

For a great discussion on digital citizenship, click here.

In the future most people, students and teachers alike, will participate in various local and global learning communities. While these learning communities are accessed in the classroom teachers need to model, and teach safe and legal use of technology as well as digital information. Students should be taught the respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the intellectual documentation of sources.

Facts to for teachers and students to remember:

1. Not all Internet information is true, valid, or appropriate.
2. The Internet is a powerful tool that should be used wisely.
3. Monitoring is crucial.
4. Students need to hear the rules of technology and the Internet often. The rules should be posted in the classroom.

Making this IMovie was fun! I know will enjoy using this tool. Implementing IMovie into most of my units will be easy and interesting for the students. I think this will add to the class discussion and presentations!! :)

Tool #10

APPS!! I love my iPhone! I have had it for a couple of years now and over the time have collected a good amount of apps! On my phone I have the following apps that I find fun and feel the students would be interested in as well...

1. Bookworm-word game
2. Wurdle-word game
3. Jeopardy-trivia game
4. Who wants to be a Millionaire-trivia game
5. iBooks-reading
6. Sound Smart-learning new words
7. 31 Seconds-trivia of the day
8. Words with Friends-word game
9. TanZen Lite-strategy game
10. Nine Gaps-math game

Many of these game would be useful for students to learn new words and expand their vocabulary.

Tool #9

1. With Jing my students will be able to collaborate on a project or presentation together. However, like stated on the 11 tools page for #9 the students will need a camera attached to their computer. Other ways for the students to benefit from using JING...

Collaborate as a group on a presentation or project
Share with the group/class a snapshot of a document
Narrate your photos
Comment verbally on other students' homework/classwork

2. Skype is a great tool. I have used this multiple times when visiting with my son who attends collge in Rochester, New York. This is a fabulous way to keep in touch with others. For the classroom, the students could use this while working at home, still working with each other but from their own home. I know a lot of students already are very familiar with Skype and use it on a daily basis to keep in touch with friends at night and during the summer. It's a fun and great invention!! For Skype you definitely need a camera attached to your computer.
I have added a link to a website, "50 Awesome Ways to Use Skype in the Classroom".

Tool #8

For tool #8 I decided to use short video clips from "Beowulf" and "O Brother Where Art Thou". I found both the video clips on Hulu. I think this tool will also be helpful when the students are putting together projects and presentations for class.

I added the clips to my blog as a gadget. Honestly, I was quite amazed that I was able to actually figure out how to add them to my blog. Yay!! Success!!

Tool #6

BRISTOL, UNITED KINGDOM - FEBRUARY 24: A school pupils at the Bridge Learning Campus uses a computer at the school on February 24, 2010 in Bristol, England. The 40million GBP campus in Hartcliffe, Bristol, was constructed as part of the Government's Building Schools for the Future programme and opened in January 2009. It now offers over 800 pupils a life long provision of learning from nursery, reception and primary to secondary and post-16 education. As the UK gears up for one of the most hotly contested general elections in recent history it is expected that that the economy, immigration, the NHS and education are likely to form the basis of many of the debates. In tool #6 I found that with developing a wiki the students will be able to collaborate with each other much easier. What came to mind with this tool was students working in groups from home, maybe after school or a night for homework. This will enable each student to add to the project or activity.
I looked through PBWorks and Wikispaces for Educators. Both appeared to have a wealth of information to share!

Tool #5

For tool #5 I joined Diigo. On that site I joined two educational groups, Diigo in Education and Classroom 2.0.

http://groups.diigo.com/group/diigoineducation

http://groups.diigo.com/group/classroom20

I also bookmarked a couple of sites that I think will be useful and fun...Wordle and EduDemic.

http://www.wordle.net/

http://edudemic.com/2010/06/teachers-helping-teachers-the-pln-road-map/

On the Diigo website I searched through the education tags to find good information and sites to browse. I think bookmarking all your favorites to one place on the internet will be very helpful and much easier to get to from whatever computer you're using!

Tool #4

Google Reader is great! I think the students will really like being able to follow sites without having to go to all different sites...just one with everything there!

I also liked the idea of Google Docs. Makes everything much more streamlined. I put together the summer reading list for my classes...9 & 12 and shared it with another teacher.

This is all very good learning information that the students will be able to take advantage of in the classroom!!

Tool #3

Hello!! Tool #3 was quite fun!! I am still playing with making a short video to add to my blog. I think the students will definitely get a kick out of using these tools. For English we can use the blog and add all sorts of interesting Wordles, Poetry Blenders, Word Mosaics, etc. pertaining to our current unit. I am certain these will add a new dimension to the students learning!

Tool #2

1. I am excited to learn new things to further connect me with my students. These learning tools will help me stay current with new technology that my students are already proficient at using on a daily basis. I welcome the opportunity to learn about new technology and fun ways to implement it into my classroom!!

2. "So 1% of your blog’s users are actively engaging with your blog and the rest are at best occasional contributers."
I find it very interesting that few people that read blogs actually leave a comment, however after really giving it some thought, I am actually guilty of this too. So, in the future I will make a concerted effort to contribute when reading other blogs. :)

3. The blogs I am now following are: Shivani's Reflections, The 11 Tools of Arbuckle, Beth Bray's Blog, Onward and Upward Learning, Frogs, Chiuahuas & Good Times, and E1even Too1s.
